Word has it Snap is working on a new pair of connected sunglasses.
Spectacles 2.0 will reportedly be water resistant and come in some new colors; the current version is available in black, coral, and teal. The third generation, meanwhile, will offer “more ambitious” updates, including a new design.
“Snap has prototyped an aluminum design with more circular lens frames and two cameras that would allow for 3D-like depth effects in videos,” the report notes. “Snap has additionally considered including a built-in GPS and a leather case, as well as a potential price tag of around $ 300.”
That would be a huge price hike from the current version, which sells for $ 129.99.
Snap did not immediately respond to PCMag’s request for comment about the report.
Snap Spectacles record 10-second bursts of video with just a tap, much like the company’s ephemeral app. When Snap launched the wearable in November 2016, it initially sold them out of yellow kiosks at random locations around the country, from Venice Beach, California, to New York City. The marketing stunt paid off; Snapchat fans (and re-sellers) lined up for blocks to grab a pair.
We here at PCMag got our hands on some Spectacles last year and found them to be “a stylish, playful wearable accessory to take your first-person social media curation to the natural next level.”
