A fond farewell to the weird and wonderful Nintendo DS

In December 2004, my boyfriend showed up at my apartment door carrying a box. “I brought you a present!” he said, clearly excited. “Open it!”

‘Tis the season, I thought, unwrapping it. I turned the box around. “A… Nintendo… DS? Is this, like… a Game Boy kind of thing?”

As I fought my way through layers of cardboard and plastic to open my new toy, he pulled a matching unit out of his own messenger bag, opened it up, and began to explain. I had never owned a portable console—I’d barely ever even owned a regular console; I was a lifelong PC gamer—and while I tried to greet the gift with good cheer, I bluntly had no idea why on Earth he had given it to me.

He could tell I was not entirely on board. “Trust me,” he said. “It’s great for the train.” I lived in Boston, he lived in Manhattan; we spent a lot of time on trains. “You’re going to love it.”

I hate to give him bragging rights, but: He was right. My relationship with the Nintendo DS outlasted my relationship with him by more than a dozen years, and I am sad to mourn its passing.

This week, we now know, marks the end of an era: after 16 years and almost a dozen total models, the Nintendo DS family of handheld gaming systems is no more. Nintendo sold well over 200 million cumulative units of the dual-screened devices over the years, but times change.

I was not the only person to greet the launch of the Nintendo DS with more bewilderment than joy. The DS was a pretty weird little device when it launched, occupying a niche I wasn’t yet aware I wanted it to fill.

Video games on the go were not a new idea in 2004. The DS was in many ways simply the next iteration on Nintendo’s incredibly popular Game Boy line of handheld consoles, which first launched in 1989. The DS wasn’t even the first one to fold: the last major product in the Game Boy line, 2003’s Game Boy Advance SP, featured a rechargeable internal battery and flipped easily shut into a clamshell, convenient for dropping back into your pocket or purse at any time.

The DS, though, was optimized for the dawn of the 21st century. It had Wi-Fi support from the start, primed for a world of multiplayer games yet to come. And the “dual” in “dual screen” was the real selling point. In 2004, the idea of a working, affordable touchscreen device in your pocket was a cool new concept—one that early DS games, alas, mostly used for gimmicks if they used it at all.

I didn’t use my launch-model “phat” DS all that much at first. I was wrapping up my last semester of grad school, and I lived close enough to campus that walking was honestly faster than waiting for the T at least half the time. I still preferred books on the frequent, lengthy bus or train rides from Boston to New York—especially because, again, lots of it was grad school reading. Plus, playing Super Mario 64—the only game I had, at first—while riding transit gave me motion sickness.

The months passed. I finished my degree and left Boston, moving with my boyfriend into the basement of a brownstone in Brooklyn. I needed to make some quick cash while I was hunting for a full-time job. So when a few weeks after I landed in the Big Apple I found myself walking past a GameStop with a “help wanted” sign in the window, I went in.

Mario Kart made me the hero of holiday sales at my GameStop. Every time someone came in looking for a PSP and Grand Theft Auto for a child under 10, I would say: “Well, the PSP is a bit fragile, and that game is rated M for good reasons—but let me show you this!”

We sold out of red DSes before I could snag one for myself.

A year after its launch, the DS finally began hitting its stride. Three different versions of Nintendogs had come out earlier in the year and were selling out all over the US. Trauma Center: Under the Knife demonstrated a solid new use case for the touch screen. And a DS version of Advance Wars, with multiplayer built in, drew fans.

But Nintendo has always been at its strongest with its core franchises. In November 2005, a month or two into my game-slinging gig, we received a big shipment of boxes labeled Mario Kart. We had dozens of copies of the game on hand and at least a hundred bundles of bright-red DS units packaged up with Mario Kart DS.

In 2006 I upgraded to a DS Lite, which I mostly used for Animal Crossing, and this time the tables were turned: I bought a second one as a birthday gift for my new boyfriend, because he lived in Washington, DC, and I lived in New York, and we were spending a lot of time on planes and trains. By 2012 we were married, and he went in halves with me on my fourth DS—this time, a gift for my mother.

An extremely playable legacy

The rise of mobile gaming since the 2007 introduction of the iPhone killed the need for a dedicated handheld device. In 2004, Wi-Fi enabled touch screens were a novelty. In 2020, almost everyone over the age of 12 has one, and kids under the age of 12 are constantly begging for one.

For Nintendo’s part, all its gaming is now potentially mobile: the great advantage of the Switch is the ease from which it goes from a tabletop console to a handheld one, with barely a pause in-between. The rise and sustained popularity of the Switch effectively started the clock ticking down the last minutes of the DS’ viability long ago. In some ways, it’s a miracle it lasted until now.

But that weird little handheld, caught in a valley between peak generations, brought us an amazing wealth of games that were, simply, different. Sure, there were ports of titles like the classic Super Nintendo RPG Chrono Trigger and the Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney series from the Game Boy Advance. But when developers finally wrapped their heads around that touch screen, they ran with it.

My favorite was Square Enix’s standout 2008 RPG The World Ends with You. TWEWY used the dual screens to make the player take control of two characters at once, making the idea of partnership incredibly literal as you handled combat on both the top and bottom screens in tandem, making your characters work together.

You can see the echoes of DS design even now. I never played Kingdom Hearts: Dream Drop Distance, for example, in its original 3DS version, but my family and I are currently working through the HD remake, and it’s shockingly clear how large an impact the DS’ design had on the title. Among other things, Dream Drop Distance is chock full of Nintendogs-style mini-games in which you create, pamper, and play with particolored pup-like spirit pets. Scritching them behind the ear with a PlayStation 4 controller just doesn’t work as well as a stylus on a touchscreen would have; it isn’t nearly as satisfying.

But all the JRPG innovation in the world doesn’t have anything on the truly off-the-wall DS experiments like Electroplankton, the core mechanic of which could fairly be described as: it goes “bloop.”

This, more than hardware, was the true strength of the Nintendo DS. It could put popular, high-budget, high-profile releases in your pocket right next to the strange and experimental, and the two would happily co-exist. That, too, is something we no longer needed a dedicated handheld for. This has become de rigueur on every platform. Nintendo, Microsoft, and Sony every year promote their independent developer showcases right alongside the Mario, Halo, and Metal Gear franchises players expect.

We have not permanently lost the DS’ games or gameplay. Many of the best titles are already available on Switch, PC, or mobile—heck, I just caved and re-purchased the Phoenix Wright games for PC during a sale on Steam earlier this month. Perhaps, however, we have lost its whimsy. There must be hundreds if not thousands of virtual pet apps now available for iOS and Android, I’m sure—and I’m equally sure that every last one of them must be some kind of microtransaction-based, ad-filled, data-sucking, time-gated energy sink. Anything engaging is now a service, no matter how much I may long for the days when you could pay $ 20 or $ 30 and simply own a thing.

But the DS’ legacy, at least, lives on. Gaming on every platform—on the go and on your TV—is now full of experimental indie gaming gems, some of which end up going really big. And the Switch, which is always mobile, brings its A game to its AAA games.

So thanks, little clamshell console that could. You did great, you expanded the idea of what on-the-go gaming could be, and I’ll miss you.
